apple.com cancels my order forty minutes after confirming it, Coinbase Card

Apologies in advance, this may be a stupid one.

I tried to order a laptop from Apple's site twice this week with the Coinbase Card. Both times the order goes through, I get the confirmation email, and then about forty minutes later a second email saying the order was cancelled because the payment could not be completed.

Smaller things on the same site work. A cable last month, fine. The card is fine everywhere else, groceries and so on.

What I think is happening is that the 3D Secure step never appears — I never get asked to confirm anything, on the app or by message. Is there a setting for that? I have looked everywhere in the Coinbase app and cannot find it.

The mechanism is worth knowing because it explains the size dependency.

This card converts crypto to dollars at the moment of authorisation, against your exchange balance. For a cable that is instant and invisible. For a four figure order it is a larger conversion, and if the price moves or the balance is spread across several assets it can fall short between the authorisation and the settlement — which is exactly what a confirmed-then-cancelled order looks like from your side.

Hold the amount in USDC or in cash on the exchange before you order, not in the assets you actually want to keep. That removes the conversion from the path entirely.

The missing 3DS is a separate thing and I would not chase it; not every issuer steps up every transaction.

That makes sense, I had it mostly in BTC. Will move it to USDC and try again, thank you.

Worth noting that converting to USDC to make the purchase work is itself a disposal in most jurisdictions; the card is doing the same thing invisibly on every swipe, which is the part people find out about a year later.

Moved it to USDC, ordered again on Saturday, cancelled again. Same forty minute gap.

Ordered it from a different retailer in the end. Still do not know what it was.
