Half my card traffic declines at the gateway and I can't ask people to install a wallet

Running the card-input flow on a crypto gateway since February — customer pays Visa or MC, it converts at the rail, I receive USDT. On paper that solves the entire merchant-acquiring problem, because I am not the merchant of record on the card side.

Approval rates by month, all traffic, no filtering:

Month Attempts Approved Rate
Feb 412 268 65.0%
Mar 903 551 61.0%
Apr 1,240 683 55.1%
May (to 7th) 288 149 51.7%

The trend is the problem, not the level. Same offer, same geos, same price point. The declines cluster on a handful of issuing BINs and the gateway's answer is that BIN behaviour is outside their control, which is probably true and completely useless to me.

So: is there a second card-to-crypto rail anyone here has actually pushed volume through, or is one rail all there is and the real answer is to stop taking cards?

one rail. that's it. everything else calling itself card-to-crypto is that rail with a skin on it

you're paying three and a half percent plus chargeback exposure so people who won't hold usdc can buy from you. at some point you have to work out what that segment is worth net.

I ran the same product for a quarter in APAC and the decline curve looked like yours, so at least it is not your account.

What moved the number for me, in order of how much it helped: dropping the ticket to just under a round hundred, retrying a decline once after ninety seconds rather than immediately, and putting a second non-card path on the same checkout page. The third one is the honest answer — about a fifth of the people who fail a card will pay in USDT if the option is right there and the button does not look like a downgrade.

None of that fixes the BIN issue. It just stops the BIN issue costing you the whole order.

IME the trend you're describing is the gateway's own risk model tightening, not the issuers. They watch your chargeback ratio climb against a growing denominator and they turn the screws quietly.

What's your ratio? If it's over about half a per cent that's your answer, and no second rail will take you either.

0.31% across the four months, 0.44% in April alone. So it is climbing, and April is the month the approvals fell hardest. That is a better fit for your theory than for mine and I do not love it.

0.44 isn't a good number and you posted it yourself. What's the refund rate separately?

Refunds 2.1%. Which is high, and yes, I know what that pair looks like from their side.

Sorry to bump something from May, I found this looking for exactly the same thing and I didn't want to start a duplicate.

Did the decline rate ever come back? I'm at the point of deciding whether to build the card flow at all and this thread is basically the only real data on the board about it. Either way thank you for posting actual numbers, most threads just say it's fine.
