every Apple charge on the crypto.com card started failing in February and nothing else did

Sorry if this belongs somewhere else, I nearly put it in the newbie board again.

Background first because I think it matters. I have had the Crypto.com Visa for about a year and a half, on the Plus tier, paid for with the CRO stake rather than the monthly fee. It has been fine. 0% FX is real, I have used it in four countries, no complaints at all.

At the end of January I unstaked, because I wanted the CRO for something else and I was happy to drop to the basic tier. Card kept working. Then from the 2nd of February every single Apple charge started failing. iCloud storage, two App Store subscriptions, and an order on their site for a keyboard that got cancelled twice.

The card works everywhere else. Groceries, a hotel, my hosting, all fine, same day. It is only Apple. Has anyone seen a card go selectively dead at one merchant like this? I do not even know what to search for.

I do not think so? The app shows the same last four as before.

last four is not the number. check the BIN, first six

Which of the failing charges are recurring and which are one-off? Be precise, it matters.

iCloud and the two subscriptions are recurring. The keyboard was a one-off on their website. Everything that works elsewhere is one-off.

Then it is not a merchant block, it is a stored credential. Apple keeps a token for the card, not the number, and if the token stopped matching what the issuer expects, everything Apple has on file fails while a fresh entry succeeds.

The keyboard order almost certainly used the card already on your Apple account rather than a new entry, so it is in the same bucket.

Ravenstack has it, and the tier change is what caused it.

When you unstake mid-period the card downgrades rather than continuing, and a downgrade on this product is a reissue — same last four in the app, different underlying credential. The plastic in your wallet keeps working because the chip and the mag data get re-provisioned quietly. Anything holding a network token from before the downgrade does not, and Apple is the merchant most likely to be holding one, because Apple Pay and the Apple account billing entry are both tokenised.

What to do, in this order: remove the card entirely from Apple Pay on every device, then remove it from the payment method on the Apple account itself, wait an hour, and add it back from scratch rather than restoring it. Then update each subscription individually — they do not all pick up the new default, which is the part that catches people.

What I cannot promise is the subscriptions that already failed. Apple's own retry logic puts a hold on a subscription after repeated declines and that hold is on their side, not the card's.

Thank you, that is the first thing that has explained why it is only Apple. Trying it tonight.

Did you unstake too?

Removed and re-added, both devices, waited it out.

The keyboard order went through this morning. One of the two subscriptions picked up the new card and renewed. iCloud still fails and the second subscription still fails, and both now show a warning saying the payment method needs updating even though it is updated.

So two thirds fixed, which is more than I had yesterday.

Worth writing down what this actually cost, because the tier maths on this card gets discussed as if the only variable is cashback.

Plus Basic
Cashback 3.5% 1.5%
Cost $4.99/mo or $500 CRO staked free
Reissue on change yes yes

The two point difference is the number everyone quotes. The reissue is the number nobody quotes, and it is the one that just cost you a month of subscription chaos and a cancelled order. If you move tier in either direction you are re-provisioning every stored credential you have, and most people have more of those than they think.

Same applies going up. The 6% headline needs $400,000 of CRO locked for 180 days, and if you unlock early you land exactly where he is now.
