Fifteen euro for a Njalla box — talk me out of moving everything there

So I finally got round to spinning up a Njalla box this week and honestly this is a game changer for me!

Signup wanted an email address and that was it. No name, no address, no card. Paid in XMR, box was there in a few minutes. Fifteen euro a month which is more than I pay anywhere else but you are getting the whole no-identity thing baked in.

Seriously thinking about moving all four of my landers over and consolidating. Someone talk me out of it before I do something stupid, because I know one of you is about to.

Fine, I will do it. Depends what you're running, but you are paying fifteen for a box whose spec you can buy for four.

The no-identity part is real and it is worth money. It is just not worth eleven euro a month per server, and you have noticed this at exactly the moment you are about to multiply it by four. Virtualine will take Monero, ask you nothing, and start around four. Same absence of a name, a third of the invoice.

What Njalla is genuinely best in class at is the domain side, where they hold the registration and you sit behind it. That is a model nobody else runs. The VPS is a competent box from a company whose reputation was built on the other product.

You are pricing the hardware. Nobody buying this is buying hardware.

What you get for the difference is a contact surface consisting of one email field and an operator with a demonstrated history of not filling in the other ones. Four euro hosts also ask you nothing at signup. Ask yourself what they do when somebody with letterhead asks them something afterwards, because that is when the two products stop being the same product.

Consolidating four landers onto one box is the actual mistake in the opening post and neither of us has mentioned it.

We are going to keep disagreeing about this one.

A demonstrated history of not filling in fields is a thing you cannot buy for eleven euro because you cannot buy it at all — it is either true of the operator or it is not, and you find out once. I would rather run two cheap boxes in two places and assume both operators will fold, than one expensive box and assume its operator will not.

Agreed entirely on the consolidation though.

Four lander one box. No.

Whatever host you choose, this is the part that kill you. One complaint, four site gone, and now they know all four are yours.

It has to receive, because that is where the server details and the renewal notice go. XMPP works instead if you prefer.

Which means the honest description of the account is: one identifier, chosen by you, that you must keep alive for as long as the box exists. Choose it accordingly and do not reuse it anywhere. People spend a week picking a host and thirty seconds picking the address they hand it.

Ok the four on one box thing landed, I am not doing that.

Still keeping the Njalla box though, I like it too much to argue. Will spread the rest around.
