Sorry for the essay — how do you pay for site costs without using your normal card?

Sorry if this is the wrong section, mods move it if so.

Background first because I think it matters. I've been building a small review site since March. Nothing clever, just long articles in a boring niche. It took until August to earn anything at all and last month it did about $180, which I know is nothing to most of you, but it's the first money I've made online that wasn't a job.

The problem is that everything I pay for goes on one debit card. Hosting, a scraper subscription, one small ad test. It's the card attached to the account my salary lands in, and my partner sees the statement. Not because I'm doing anything wrong — "why is there a charge from a Cyprus hosting company" is just a conversation I'd rather have later than now. I also don't love that six different services all have the same card number sitting in their database.

So the actual question: what do people here use to pay for this stuff instead? I don't need anything anonymous, I'm genuinely not doing anything that needs it. I just want the site's costs separate from my life. Sorry for the essay.

the essay answered the question. you want a separate card, not a secret one. completely different thread

grindstone is right, and it makes this much easier, because "separate" is a far lower bar than what most people arrive here asking for.

Two things worth knowing before you pick anything. A lot of hosting and SaaS billing declines prepaid and virtual cards on the recurring charge even when the first payment goes through fine, so whatever you get, test it on a small monthly renewal before you move your hosting onto it. And keep ad spend on a different card from your infrastructure — if one gets frozen you don't want the site going down in the same week.

For the actual comparison, don't take one recommendation from me. The Crypto Cards & Prepaid board here is where people post real top-up fees and which merchants decline what, and it's a lot more current than anything I'd type from memory tonight. Read the fee threads over there rather than the launch announcements.

12 thanks

Thank you all, genuinely.

grindstone — you're right and I feel slightly stupid. I'd spent two weeks reading threads about staying anonymous when that isn't my problem at all.

hana_v — that's exactly the answer I needed, and I hadn't thought about the recurring charge thing even once. Going to read the Crypto Cards & Prepaid board properly before I pick anything.

tmp_9931 — good luck to you as well, ha.

Will report back either way.

Reporting back as promised, five weeks on.

Spent two evenings reading before doing anything, which was the right call. Picked something with a low top-up fee and tested it on the cheapest monthly renewal I had first, exactly like hana_v said — and good job, because it declined the second month even though the signup charge went through fine. The one I moved to has taken every renewal since.

Hosting, the scraper and one ad test all sit on it now, none of it touches the joint account, and I can see what the site actually costs me in one place, which I wasn't expecting to care about but do.

Thanks again. This board's alright.
