A name I have held for six years expired on the 14th and sat in redemption for about four hours before I caught it.

No renewal reminder at 60 days, 30 days, or 7. No invoice. The account shows the renewal as unpaid with no record of a notice ever being generated. I checked the mailbox properly — nothing filtered, nothing bounced.

Their registrar side has been quiet for a while and this is the second administrative thing in a year. Nothing was lost. The point is that nothing was lost because I happened to look, and that is not a system.

Moving eleven names. Iceland posture, crypto payment, proxy WHOIS, and a registrar whose renewal process is not my attention.

Depends what you're running, but for eleven names with that posture there are two real answers and they're a genuine fork rather than a ranking.

The other Icelandic registrar is the like-for-like swap: you stay the registrant, crypto payment, proxy WHOIS, similar pricing, and it's been operationally boring for a long time, which is the entire feature you're asking for.

The Swedish one is a different model — they're the registrant of record and you're a user in their system. Strongest WHOIS shield there is, and their renewal handling is genuinely good. The cost is that getting a name out is a process rather than a transfer, and if you ever fall out with them you have no leverage at all.

For eleven names you'd otherwise keep for a decade, I'd take the like-for-like. The shield is better on the Swedish side and I still wouldn't put a decade of names somewhere I can't unilaterally leave.

Four hour in redemption and you get it back with no fee? Lucky. Usually is expensive.

Redemption fee applied. It was not expensive relative to losing the name, which is the only comparison that matters and is exactly the comparison they rely on.

Was auto-renew on? Half of these threads end with somebody finding a toggle.

On, with a balance sufficient to cover it. That is what makes this worth posting rather than worth being embarrassed about.

Two structural points, because moving registrar fixes one of these and not the other.

The dependency you actually have is not on the registrar's invoicing, it is on your own monitoring, and you have just discovered you have none. A registrar's reminder emails are a courtesy from a company with no obligation to you and no consequence for failing. Every registrar will eventually miss one — the good ones less often, none of them never.

The fix is a check you own that reads the expiry date from the registry rather than from the registrar's panel, and alerts you at 45 days regardless of what any email says. It is a small amount of work and it makes the registrar choice much less important, which is the useful outcome here.

The second point is about doing this now: your eleven names have eleven different expiry dates, and a migration is exactly the moment those get scrambled. Record all eleven before you move anything. I have watched somebody move a portfolio and lose track of one because the transfer added a year and their mental model of renews in spring quietly became autumn.

I have not tested any of the hosted domain-monitoring services and would not recommend one; the check is about fifteen lines.

Correct, and the more uncomfortable version is that I have been making the monitoring argument at other people for years while relying on a registrar's mailing list for my own names.

Check is written. Eleven names, forty-five days, reads the registry. Moving them anyway.
