Swapped the billing card three times in a month and the account went down

Had this exact thing happen last year so I want to check I'm not pattern-matching on nothing.

Account was clean since January. Then in the space of about four weeks I swapped the billing card three times - first one hit its monthly ceiling, second one started declining on the daily charge, third one is the one that was on it when the account went down on the 19th.

Nothing else changed. Same landers, same geos, spend was flat. So is the card churn itself the flag, or was it always going to happen and I'm blaming the wrong thing? Anyone actually watched this happen more than once?

three cards in a month on one account is a fraud pattern. it isn't subtle, mate

I have thin data on this but it points the same way as grindstone.

Twelve accounts I've run since 2022, logging every billing instrument change and whether the account survived 60 days after:

Card changes in 30d Accounts Survived 60d
0 5 5
1 4 3
2 2 1
3+ 1 0

n=12 is not a sample and I'd throw the last row out entirely on one account. But the direction is consistent with what everyone says anecdotally, and the interesting bit is that one change is nearly free. It's the second one inside the window that seems to cost you.

The number isn't really the thing. It's whether the cards look like the same person.

Caveat: I only run one vertical so this may not generalise. But when I've had to rotate, rotating within the same issuer and the same billing address has never cost me an account. Rotating across three different BIN ranges with three different postcodes in a month has, twice.

So I'd say: as many as you like if they're consistent, and two is already too many if they aren't.

Is not card count. Is card that declines. Decline on billing is the flag, not the swap.
