Think I bought the wrong AbeloHost plan — how do I even tell?

Sorry if this is the wrong section, I nearly put it in newbie corner but it seemed like a hosting question so I am trying here first.

Background, and I will keep it as short as I can. I read a thread here in the summer where people said AbeloHost was the sensible Netherlands option, so a month ago I signed up and bought the cheapest VPS they had because I am not running anything big yet and money is money. Everything works fine, no complaints about the service at all, it has been up the whole time.

Then last week somebody in a Telegram group said the cheap plans are not the offshore ones and that the whole reason people use them does not apply to what I bought. I went back through the order email and honestly I cannot tell. It says VPS and a plan name and a price and nothing about DMCA either way.

So: how do I tell which one I am on? And if it is the wrong one, is that a support ticket or do I have to buy a new server and move everything? Sorry for the length.

Your Telegram friend is right. They have two product line and people mix them up constantly.

Standard tier forward the complaint to you same as any Dutch host. Offshore tier does not. Is not one host with a policy, is two products with two policies and same login page.

How to tell: offshore tier start around fifteen euro month. If you buy "cheapest they had" then you are on standard, is very simple test. And no it is not support ticket, is different product — you buy the other plan and you move.

What are you running that needs the offshore tier? You said you are not running anything big yet.

If nothing on the box would ever generate a complaint you have bought the correct plan and can stop worrying.

Fair question. Right now it is two review sites in a vertical where the affiliate programmes are legitimate but the trademark owners are known for sending letters about brand terms. Nothing has arrived yet but I would rather not find out how a standard tier reacts on the day one does.

Thank you both, that price test is exactly the sort of thing I could not find written down anywhere.

Depends what you're running, and brand-term review sites are the classic case for buying the offshore tier before you need it rather than after.

Move while the box is empty. Migrating two static sites this week is an afternoon. Migrating them the week a complaint arrives, with a clock running and you reading documentation for the first time, is how people lose a weekend and a domain in the same seventy two hours.

One more thing since nobody has said it: whichever tier you land on, the plan protects the server, not the domain. Different company, different letter, different outcome.

4 thanks→ aged domains + hosting, PM for the list

Bought bulletproof. Bought the cheap one. Classic.

Reporting back in case someone finds this later with the same confusion.

Moved to the offshore plan a fortnight ago. Confirmed with support first and they were straightforward about it — they told me plainly which line the old plan was on, which is more than the order email did. Paid in USDT, no ID asked for at any point.

Migration took about three hours including me breaking DNS twice. Thanks vlad_ptk, Ravenstack and byte_broker, the price test was the thing that settled it.
