Virtualine's billing panel is a nulled copy — does anybody here actually care?

Virtualine gets recommended here every week on price and nobody mentions the thing that would stop me buying it.

The client portal was flagged a while back as running a pirated build of the billing software. Not the hosting, not the hypervisor — the panel that holds your order history, your ticket contents and whatever you typed into a payment form.

A nulled install cannot take vendor security patches. That is not a moral objection, I do not care what anybody pirates. It is that the one component in the stack holding the customer-side record is, structurally, the one component that will not be updated when the next authenticated-RCE advisory lands, and every operator running the same nulled build gets popped in the same week by the same person.

The boxes themselves are good. Best price per unit of performance in the no-KYC tier, Monero accepted, four euro entry, no identity asked for. I am not saying it is a scam. I am saying the recommendation always stops one layer short of where the risk is.

I have box there two year. Nothing happen. Not one downtime I remember, not one incident.

You describe risk that exist on paper. I describe two year of it not happening. Both are information but only one of them is measurement.

Where was it flagged and when? I have seen this repeated three times on this board and never once with the source attached.

Two years of nothing happening is exactly what the risk profile predicts, which is why it is not the reassurance you think it is.

This class of thing does not degrade gradually. It sits fine for years and then an advisory drops for the version everybody is pinned to, and the unpatched installs go over in a weekend en masse because somebody scripted it against a fingerprint. Uptime tells you nothing about it either way — the hypervisor stays up perfectly while the panel in front of it is being read by a stranger.

FWIW the mitigation is boring and mostly yours rather than theirs. Assume the panel is public. Nothing in a ticket you would mind reading back later, nothing reused between the panel and the box, keys not passwords for SSH, and pay in a way that does not leave a card number in a form on an install nobody is patching.

A review site that audits no-KYC services flagged it, and it has been in their listing since. I am not linking it here and it takes one search.

More to the point: the operator has never denied it, and that is the part I would weigh.

Your mitigation list I already do. Everybody here should already do it on every host, not only this one.

So what change? I still have best price and no identity, and I treat panel as public which I do anyway. You describe reason to be careful. Careful I can be. Is not reason to pay double somewhere else.

Depends what you're running, and for once I think both sides are right about different customers.

A relay, a scraper, a staging box — the panel holds an order for a four euro server and nothing else. Who cares. A client estate where the ticket history would tell a reader which twelve domains sit behind one operator, that is a different exposure and it is not the box that leaked it.

I have sold hosting long enough to say the quiet part: the panel is where the linkage lives on every host, patched or not.

That is because the thread is two people who agree on every fact and disagree about how much it matters, which is most arguments on this board and about half of them in the industry.

For what it is worth I have watched cheap hosts get compromised through their billing panel since roughly 2013, and the thing that got people burned was never the compromise itself. It was that the panel knew which of their sites belonged to the same person and the box never did.

Nothing changes for you, and I am not asking you to move. You have priced the risk and accepted it, which is a legitimate position taken with the facts in hand.

What I object to is the recommendation appearing here every week with the facts left out, so that people accept the risk without knowing they are doing it. That is the argument, and we are not going to finish it.
